Stockholm is one of few major cities in the world that offers so much greenery in the middle of the city. The parks provide a peaceful break from the city noises, and are a good place for walks and recreation. They are especially appreciated by people who are living in the city without access to private gardens. On warm summer days, you’ll find the locals enjoying a good book or picnic on the grass. Parks are also a great place to spot cute dogs and beautiful flowers, which is mostly why I visit them. Below, I’m sharing my favorite parks in Stockholm, which I visit regularly.
The historic Royal Garden is located in the heart of the Stockholm across the street from the locally famous department store Nordiska Kompaniet (NK). It serves as a popular hangout spot with plenty of outdoor cafes and restaurants. The highlight of this park is however the cherry blossom season in March/April. After months of cold weather and darkness, it is lovely to come here for soft serve ice cream while admiring all the beautiful flowers.
It gets quite crowded here during cherry blossom season as many people come to cherish it (and to snap their annual cherry blossom picture for Facebook and Instagram).
During summer, this park is home to concerts, festivals and art galleries. In the winter, there are beautiful Christmas decorations as well as an ice rink. I have shared a few images in my Christmas guide to Stockholm, which you’ll find here.
There are also many beautiful and historic buildings surrounding this park that are worth seeing. Considering the convenient location, you will be able to squeeze in a visit no matter what other plans you may have for the day.
The park is also near many of my favorite shops, such as Uniqlo and Oolong Tea House. I also love visiting the nearby Grand Hotel.
Since this park is in a residential area, this is definitely more of a hidden gem than my other favorites. It is situated on a hilltop overlooking the rooftops of the city, which makes it a magical spot for a romantic evening or picnic with friends.
Vanadislunden is probably the park I visit most on this list. I come here to take photos, for smaller walks and to relax and look at the dogs. I have also visited on New Years Eve as it is a great spot for fireworks.
This is actually one of the largest parks in the city. It is conveniently located about 5-10 minutes from the Tekniska Högskolan or Rådmansgatan metro stations.
While this part of town is most famous for museums, the Skansen Zoo (which I’ve shared more about in my Christmas guide to Stockholm) and the amusement park Gröna Lund, it offers a lot more. Here you’ll also find beautiful, historic parks and recreation areas, usually with beautiful views of the waters and the city.
There are many good restaurants here as well, with large outdoor patios. Two of my favorites are Ulla Winbladh and Djurgårdsbrunn.I highly recommend visiting one of them and following it up with a walk to explore this part of town further.
This lush, green oasis is Stockholm’s own version of Central Park, and the apartments surrounding it are among the most exclusive ones in the country. People dream about having views of this park from the windows of their homes.
Here you’ll see businesspeople from the surrounding offices enjoying their lunches on warm summer days, people participating in various sports and a lot of picnic enthusiasts enjoying rose wine in the sunset. You’ll also find one of my favorite restaurants Surfers, which is the perfect place for colourful summer cocktails and tapas-style Sichuan-Chinese food.
If you want sweeping views of the center of Stockholm as well as the northern parts of the city, I suggest that you pop over to the hills of Södermalm. There are many parks offering great views here, but the views you’ll get from Skinnarviken are hard to beat. This is, after all the highest natural point in the city.
This is quite a large park and it is built in two separate sections, one regular park with greenery, trees and beautiful views, and one hilltop area with even better views.
The views are stunning from the top. I love that you can see so much of the city from here. Sunsets are especially stunning and I will make sure to return for one of those soon. This part of the park mostly attracts younger crowds, people who want to do some BBQ:ing with a view and people who wants to just chill with a little bit of music.
Skinnarviksberget is not the only park in the area with a beautiful view, you can get similar views from many places along the northern parts of Södermalm. I highly encourage you to visit and explore the island at your own pace.
What are you favorite parks in your city? Let me know in the comments!
Hi and welcome to my travel guide! My name is Beatrice. I’m a lawyer in my twenties living in Stockholm, Sweden. I started Foodie on Vacay because I travel quite a bit, and my trips are always centered around having great food experiences.
